Ranked Queues


Here’s where you queue up alone or with a friend, testing your mechanics, game sense, and on-the-fly communication alongside like-minded individuals. It’s your queue if your motto is, “win lane, win game.” Nobody you meet in solo queue will be grouped with more than one other person, so each game is an opportunity to coordinate with fresh allies.

Rating in solo queue is separate from ranked flex, and you’ll earn rewards unique to your solo tier at the end of the season.

Ranked Flex

In the ranked flex queue, you can team up with any number of players--or go it alone--and expect to play with groups of players focused on teamplay. This is the queue where you’ll see cleanly-executed map rotations and coordinated three-man tower pushes. If you’ve got a full five man team, this is where you’ll compete.

You’ll get unique rewards for your ranked flex tier at the end of the season.

Queue Limitations

When you’re ready to party up with other players for ranked, you’ll need to consider your placement on the ladder. Most players will be able to queue with players within one tier of their rank. During placement matches, you’re restricted based on last season’s rank (the default is Silver tier if you were unranked last season). These restrictions get tighter the higher you go:

  • Bronze Tier: Can only queue with Bronze and Silver Tier players.
  • Silver Tier: Can only queue with Bronze, Silver, and Gold Tier players.
  • Gold Tier: Can only queue with Silver, Gold, and Platinum Tier players.
  • Platinum Tier: Can only queue with Gold and Platinum players, with exceptions listed below.
  • Diamond V: Can only queue with Platinum I, II, III, and Diamond II, III, IV, V Tier players.
  • Diamond IV: Can only queue with Platinum I, II, and Diamond I, II, III, IV, V players.
  • Diamond III: Can only queue with Platinum I, Diamond I, II, III, IV, V, and Master Tier players.
  • Diamond II: Can only queue with Diamond I, II, III, IV, V and Master Tier players.
  • Diamond I: Can only queue with Diamond I, II, III, IV and Master Tier players.
    Additionally, Diamond I and Master Tier players can only queue solo or with one teammate.
  • Master and Challenger Tier: Can only queue with Master, Diamond I, II, and III Tier players.
    Additionally, Diamond I and Master players can only queue solo or with one teammate.

Placements, Promotions, and Series


Everyone starts off each new ranked season without a rank. The first ten games you play in each queue will place you in a tier and division for that queue. Where you land is based on the outcome of these games, the difficulty of the opponents you faced in these games, and your rank from the previous season and preseason. All players undergo a ‘soft reset’ at the beginning of each season, so your new rank will likely be lower than it was at the end of the previous season. You can read more about preseason here.

Promotions and Series

Once you're placed in a division, you'll earn League Points (LP) for each game you win, and lose them for games you lose. Once you collect 100 LP in a tier, you'll enter a promotional series. To advance a division, you'll need to win 2 out of 3 games. To advance a tier (from Silver I to Gold V), you need to win 3 of 5.

Promotion series up to Gold I don’t expire, but you’ll only have 28 days to complete a Platinum promo series and 5 days to complete Diamond and Master promotions. Dodging a promo series counts as a loss.

Promo Helper

If you lose your promos but make it back into your series, you’ll start off with at least one win. This applies to every division and tier up to Gold I, so you’re on your own for promotion into Platinum and above!

In instances where a player elects to dodge a game in a promotion series by leaving during champion select, their account will be ineligible for promo helper upon entering their next series.

Finally, promo helper only works once each time you get it. If you’re in a series to move from Gold IV to Gold III with promo helper active, but lose the series and then demote into Gold V, you’ll have promo helper from Gold V to Gold IV, but you won’t have it for Gold IV to Gold III

Demotions and Decay

There are two possible ways to drop below your current division and tier: decay and demotion. Decay sets in after you don’t play for a long period of time; you will begin to lose LP until you play a match in that queue. Demotion occurs if you lose enough matches at 0 LP in a division or tier.


Platinum, Diamond, Master, and Challenger are all subject to decay. In Platinum and Diamond, after 28 days of inactivity in any ranked queue, you'll begin losing LP based on your current tier. Every seven days after that, you'll lose LP until you play a match in that queue. Diamond players lose 50 LP each time they decay, platinum players lose 35.

Master and Challenger work a bit differently:

  • Each game you play in Master and Challenger tier is stored as a "banked game," up to a maximum of 10.
  • Each day, 1 banked game is removed from your reserves.
  • When your banked games reach 0, you'll lose 100 LP per day until you bank more games.
  • Wins and losses both count toward banked games; all that matters is that you play. You can track your banked games in your profile, in the Ranked tab.

If you fall at or below zero LP as a result of decay, you'll be placed in the next-lowest division. If you're already in division V of your tier, you'll fall into the next tier down (for example, Platinum V to Gold I).

Decay doesn't occur for players in Bronze, Silver, or Gold.


A particularly bad losing streak may result in dropping a tier or division, though there’s no set number of games that may trigger a demotion. Losing enough games at 0 LP can drop you into the next-highest division. If you’re in division V, it’s possible you’ll even drop a tier. After a demotion, your LP will be set to 25 or 75, depending on how many losses you had at 0 LP.

After being promoted into a new division or tier, you’ll gain the effects of a demotion ‘shield,’ which prevents you from dropping. This is to keep you from winning a series, losing a few games and then immediately dropping back to where you were. The shield lasts for 3 games after advancing a division, and 10 games after advancing a tier (3 games for Master tier).

How Transfers Affect Ranked

Ranked standing is unique on each server. After transferring, you’ll be seeded into a ranked league after playing 1 game on your new server. The placement will be based on your current MMR relative to the MMR of everyone on that server, so it’s possible that you’ll be in a different tier or division than your original server.

If you return to your previous server, you will return to the rank you were at when you left the server minus any LP decay that would have taken place between your transfers. Your standing is tracked independently on each server, so LP decay will only affect the ranked standings of the inactive account (the account located on the server you transferred from).

Master and Challenger


  • Master tier has no divisions. There's just a single league with all Master Tier competitors.
  • There is no limit to how many players can be in Master tier.
  • Inactivity: Master players can "bank" up to ten games. One game is removed per day, and players in this tier lose 100 LP per day whenever their bank is at 0.
  • There's no upper limit on LP. Players that continue winning will keep earning LP and increase their lead in the standings.
  • When a player enters Master Tier, they cannot be removed from Master Tier for three games.

When a player is demoted from Master tier to Diamond:

  • If your MMR is greater than or equal to the Master tier MMR threshold, your LP will be set to 75.
  • If your MMR is less than the Diamond I MMR threshold, your LP will be set to 0.
  • If neither of the above apply, your LP will be set to 50.
  • Players who quickly drop back into Diamond I after being promoted to Master Tier will retain a minimum of 50 LP.


Only the most elite players in a region will make it into the Challenger tier. Membership in this tier is more strenuously regulated and competition works a little differently:

  • Placement into Challenger is based on a rotating twenty-four hour schedule. Each time the clock hits zero, it will recalculate the top 200 players; any Masters in the top 200 players will be promoted to Challenger, and any Challenger players who have fallen below the top 200 will be returned to the Master tier.
  • Challenger has no divisions. There's just a single league with all the Challenger tier competitors.
  • Inactivity: Challenger players can "bank" up to ten games. One game is removed per day, and players in this tier lose 100 LP per day whenever their bank is at 0.
  • There's no upper limit on LP. Players that continue winning will keep earning LP and increase their lead in the standings.
  • Challenger Tier only has 200 spots (increased from 50 when Season 2014 started).


If you’ve ever played a game and gotten a position you didn’t select, you’ve been autofilled. Autofill is activated when one position (usually support) is low in supply during matchmaking. The goal of autofill is to keep queue times reasonable and matchmaking fair.

Avoiding Autofill

First and foremost—autofill will happen to you, eventually. The best way to deal with autofill is to make sure you’re able to comfortably play at least one champion in each position. This is actually just good advice in general—you might be less inclined to blame your jungler if you’ve spent a few games missing your own smites.

The second-best way to manage autofill is to just fill or support once in a while. Remember, autofill only exists because at least one position desperately needs players. Each time you fill, you’re lightening the burden on everyone, and reducing their chances of being autofilled. It’s a quiet heroism, but heroism nonetheless. Filling, whether through autofill or selecting “Fill” as a position, also puts you under the autofill radar for a while, meaning you’ll be guaranteed your primary or secondary position in the next handful of games.

A few more details:

  • You will NOT autofill during your promo series. Be at peace.
  • Dodging doesn’t cure autofill. If you play an autofilled game, you’re immune to autofill for a while and much less likely to autofill for the near future. If you or someone else dodges during an autofilled lobby, you’re just as likely to autofill in your very next game.
  • Unfortunately, /remake will count as a game against autofill protection. This is really rare for how difficult it is to fix, so we’re not currently prioritizing it. Sorry =(
